"Community Research
Using the National Register
of Historic Places
and the Historical Marker Database"

January 22, 2026

Places listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Historical Marker Database are familiar sites across the United States, and even the world. How can the Register and Database be used for genealogical research?

This presentation by Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, AG, FOGS will take you through the steps of discovering the areas where your ancestors may have lived, and the necessary proof to have them listed on the National Register. Also those historic markers by the side of the road may contain a history of the area where they lived, and perhaps even mention them by name. Using the Database may help you explore even more of those areas.

Peggy has been involved in genealogy since before her birth.  Her parents were excellent genealogists, and instilled the same love of history and family in her and her three sisters. One of her favorite pictures is of her mother on her way to do cemetery research four days before Peggy's birth.

Miss Peggy, as she is affectionately called, is known among her colleagues for her care and compassion. She is an expert in Ohio, mid-Southern, and Appalachian research and has written several Legacy research guides. She has been a featured writer for Reminisce Magazine and has been an instructor for Ancestry Academy.
