"Serving Her Nation:
Lilah Denton Lindsey, Activism and Education in the Mvskoke Nation" Presented by Dr. Michelle M. Martin March 26, 2026 6:00 pm via Zoom
This presentation explores the remarkable life of Lilah Denton Lindsey (1860–1943), the first Muscogee (Creek) woman to earn a college degree. Of mixed Cherokee, Muscogee, and Scots heritage, Lindsey rose from a childhood speaking only the Mvskoke language to become an influential educator, teaching at mission schools throughout the Indian Territory in the 1880s and 1890s.
The presentation places Lindsey's achievements in the broader context of the Muscogee Nation navigating tribal sovereignty and American assimilation pressures during the critical transition from Indian Territory to Oklahoma statehood. Dr. Martin is a historian specializing in the history of the Indian Territory, interracial marriage and family in the American West (1800–1900), and Bleeding Kansas. She earned her B.A. and M.A. from Western Michigan University and her doctorate from the University of New Mexico in 2022. Over a nearly twenty-year career in academic and public history, Martin has taught at the college level in Kansas and Oklahoma, worked as a researcher, script writer, and field producer for television and film projects aired on PBS, A&E, the History Channel, and Investigation Discovery, and served as a museum director and consultant for small museums in the region. She has lectured on historical topics across the country for museums, historic sites, and educational institutions. From 2023–2025 she was an Assistant Professor of History and Coordinator of the Public History Certificate at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She currently serves as adjunct faculty in the Department of Social Sciences at Mesa Community College. Martin is a dedicated volunteer living history interpreter for the National Park Service and several Oklahoma Historical Society historic sites. She resides in Mesa, Arizona with her husband, Dr. Donald Fixico, Distinguished Foundation Professor and Regents' Professor of History at Arizona State University. NOTE: Due to recent attempts by 3rd party bad actors to infiltrate our meetings, all attendees are required to personally identify themselves by turning on their camera and mic to return a greeting from the host. You may turn off your camera during the presentation.
