"Finding the Butterfield: A Journey Through Time in Indian Territory" Susan Dragoo Author June 25, 2026 6:00 pm via Zoom
Did you know a transcontinental stagecoach route once cut through the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations — and its traces can still be found in southeastern Oklahoma today? Author Susan Dragoo spent eight years tracking down the two-hundred-mile Indian Territory segment of the Butterfield Overland Mail trail, and she's bringing her findings to this presentation. She will cover the trail's history, its significance to the Choctaw and Chickasaw peoples between removal and the Civil War, and how you can explore the remnants yourself.
Susan Dragoo is a writer and photographer specializing in outdoor, travel, action, and historical subjects. Specific outdoor areas of interest include hiking, running, backpacking, and motorcycling. Historical interests include Oklahoma and southwestern United States history. Since 2016, she has been retracing and exploring the Indian Territory segment of the Butterfield Overland Mail in present-day southeastern Oklahoma. A graduate of the University of Tulsa, Susan is the President of the Oklahoma chapter of the Butterfield National Historic Trail Association.She is a regular contributor to Oklahoma Today, Overland Journal, OutdoorX4, and TrailGroove magazines. Her work on western history and historical travel has been published in the Chronicles of Oklahoma and Desert Tracks. NOTE: Due to attempts by 3rd parties to infiltrate our meetings, all attendees are required to personally identify themselves by turning on their camera and mic to return a greeting from the host. You may turn off your camera during the presentation. No recordings or transcriptions are permitted unless agreed to in advance by the presenter.
